12:00 am - friends-only
This journal is friends-only for the most part; comment on this entry (or simply friend the journal, though that'll take longer for me to notice) if you'd like to see my panicked, rambling commentary during October and November. (The journal's pretty much dead the other ten months of the year.)
You may also comment for a code so that you may create your own journal. Anonymous comments are screened,
so no one but me will see your e-mail address.

If a shotgun hangs on the wall in the first act, it must have gone off by
the last act. —Anton Chekhov
... Unless it's there to distract you from the
dagger on the table. —Micki Zvi Maor
Reading a good book requires more effort from your imagination, yes; but
because of that, it's also more immersive. Thus it provides a more effective
escape from the impossible task of living than anything else this side of
drugs. —(unknown)
By necessity, by proclivity, and by delight, we all quote. In fact,
it is as difficult to appropriate the thoughts of others as it is to
invent. —R. Emerson
Every writer has to write a million words of crap before they can get on
to the good stuff. —(unknown)
so that means it'll take 20 NaNo attempts before I get to the good
writing? o.O
Everywhere I go, I'm asked if I think the universities stifle writers. My
opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a best seller
that could have been prevented by a good teacher. —Flannery

Flannery O'Connor Quotes

okay, so that one's not very reassuring for a NaNoWriMo participant. But, hell. If I write five years worth of crappy novellas before I end up with a sixth year's effort that can be refined into something good... then that's good enough!
Writing a novel is a terrible experience, during which the hair often falls out and the teeth decay.
...yeah, that one's not any better. But it's amusing.
Less Grim Flannery O'Connor Quotes
The writer, in order best to use the talents he has been given, has to write at his own intellectual level. For him to do anything else is to bury his talents. This doesn't mean that, within his limitations, he shouldn't try to reach as many people as possible, but it does mean that he must not lower his standards to do so.
The beginning of human knowledge is through the senses, and the fiction writer begins where human perception begins. He appeals through the senses, and you cannot appeal to the senses with abstractions.
There is a certain embarrassment about being a storyteller in these times when stories are considered not quite as satisfying as statements and statements not quite as satisfying as statistics; but in the long run, a people is known, not by its statements or its statistics, but by the stories it tells.
The problem of the novelist who wishes to write about a man's encounter with God is how he shall make the experience -- which is both natural and supernatural -- understandable, and credible, to his reader. In any age this would be a problem, but in our own, it is a well-nigh insurmountable one. Today's audience is one in which religious feeling has become, if not atrophied, at least vaporous and sentimental.
The novelist is required to open his eyes on the world around him and look. If what he sees is not highly edifying, he is still required to look. Then he is required to reproduce, with words, what he sees.

01:22 pm - blah
Well, the participant icon for this year is pretty boring. (Wah.)
However, I have a story idea, and I think it's good. I think the reason
the story itself will be good is because I don't plan to have any
romantic relationships. I have proven to my own satisfaction that I
absolutely cannot write them believably.
And! And, I think I might be writing alongside other people from my
dorm!!! That'll be neat :)
Most of the story-related material is kept behind friendslock. If you'd
like to see it in all its ungloriousness, comment and I'll add you. :) Current Mood: nervous Current Music: rain falling, cars driving by

10:02 pm - The End
Aaaand, it's done.
There are a couple scenes I still want to write, and this monstrosity needs editing like fish need water... but it's done.
Anyone who, for whatever reason, wants a copy, should let me know that, and let me know what format to put it in, too.

08:28 pm - Yay! The Month of Preparation Begins!
Well, I have my new icon for this year. I decided that I'll leave last
year's up until 2005. I don't like it as much, but I liked the other three
options (at least there's options this year!) less.
But, more importantly than that, it's October! (It's been
October, but the site didn't open until 1600 MDT, and I forgot about it
until just now.) So now I get to try to plan my novel. Maybe I'll name it
The Liturgical Omelet or something. But probably not.
Actually, if I don't have a good title soon, I'll call it "the omelet"
until I do :P

Blah. I have no idea what I'm going to write this year, except that I
certainly need to do it so I'm doing something with my time. I feel
really apathetic, which is probably bad, but better than panicking because I
don't have Openoffice reinstalled yet. Current Mood: apathetic Current Music: Barenaked Ladies - War On Drugs

03:00 pm - WOOOOO!
I did it!
At 1430 on November 28, 2003, I completed a novel of more than 50,000 words!
wc claims that MST.txt is 51019 words, but on the official site I claimed 51025 since Openoffice believes I have 51028.
